Lee Davis' Artist Statement:
I have been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 1976 and participate in their shows each year. As my
decorative functional pottery has progressed, the hand thrown forms have become my canvas to depict flora and fauna, as well
as modern motifs. Elegant flower arrangers and fountains complete my line of decorative elements for the home.
The decorative technique I use is a modern variation of slip trailing which dates back to Roman times. By drawing on bisque
ware with a thinned glaze in a metal tipped bottle a dark line is obtained when fired. A sumi brush gives mid-tones using a thin
wash of glaze to create depth and shading. All the pottery is lead free and dishwasher safe.
I love the plasticity of the clay in forming each piece and the quality of the fired, hard as stone, form to retain the subtle mark of
the hand. Most of all, what I strive to do in my work is combine the elements of art for the eye, function for work and comfort of
use.
Handmade functional objects are made for seeing, touching and using in our daily lives bringing joy to the senses and the ritual
rhythm of our lives.
